Preparation Strategy for Filipinos
Common Strengths (Filipino test-takers)
- Speaking: Filipinos are naturally conversational and comfortable with spoken English. Most score 6.5-7.5 in speaking.
- Listening: Good comprehension from exposure to English media. Average: 6.5-7.0.
Common Weaknesses (areas to focus on)
- Writing Task 1: Many Filipinos struggle with graph/chart description (Academic) or formal letter format (General). Practise describing trends, comparisons, and processes.
- Writing Task 2: Essay structure is critical. Use: Introduction (paraphrase + thesis), Body 1, Body 2, Conclusion. Aim for 250-280 words.
- Reading: Time management is the biggest issue. You have 20 minutes per passage — skim first, then answer. Don't spend too long on one question.
Recommended Study Plan (6-8 weeks)
- Week 1-2: Take a diagnostic test (Cambridge IELTS practice test). Identify weaknesses. Focus on understanding question types.
- Week 3-4: Intensive practice on weakest components. 2 full reading passages daily. 1 writing task daily. Listen to BBC/podcasts for 30 min.
- Week 5-6: Full practice tests under timed conditions. Review mistakes. Build vocabulary for common IELTS topics (environment, education, technology, health).
- Week 7-8: Fine-tune strategies. Focus on speed for reading. Practise speaking with a partner or tutor. Take 2-3 full mock tests.
