Philippines Student Visa 2026 -- 9(f) Visa & Special Study Permit

The Philippines is an increasingly popular study destination, with affordable tuition, English-medium instruction, and internationally recognised universities. Foreign students have two main options: the 9(f) student visa and the Special Study Permit (SSP).

Two Options for Foreign Students

Option 1: 9(f) Student Visa -- For Degree Programmes

Best for: Foreign students enrolled in full degree programmes (bachelor's, master's, doctorate) at accredited Philippine universities.

Requirements

  • Valid passport (at least 6 months validity beyond study period)
  • Completed visa application form
  • Notice of Acceptance from a CHED-recognised Philippine institution
  • Original and authenticated academic records (transcript, diploma)
  • Proof of financial capacity (bank statements, scholarship letter, or affidavit of support)
  • Police clearance from home country (authenticated by Philippine embassy)
  • Medical certificate (including chest X-ray, blood tests)
  • Passport-sized photos (white background)
  • Proof of English proficiency (for non-English speaking countries)
  • Personal History Statement

Application Process

  1. Secure admission to a CHED-recognised institution
  2. School issues Notice of Acceptance and endorsement letter
  3. Apply at the nearest Philippine embassy with all documents
  4. Attend an interview if required
  5. Processing time: 2-4 weeks
  6. Travel to the Philippines and register with the Bureau of Immigration

Validity & Renewal

Initially issued for 1 year, renewable annually for the duration of your studies. Must maintain full-time student status. Renewal done at the Bureau of Immigration with endorsement from your school.

Option 2: Special Study Permit (SSP) -- For Short Courses

Best for: Foreign nationals taking short courses, training programmes, language courses, or non-degree studies while in the Philippines on a tourist visa.

What is an SSP?

The Special Study Permit allows tourists and visa-free visitors to study in the Philippines without converting to a student visa. It is issued by the Bureau of Immigration.

Important Notes for Student Visa Holders
